What Is Round ECCA Wire?
Round ECCA wire features a circular cross-section conductor composed of an aluminum core uniformly coated with a copper layer, which is then insulated with an enamel coating. The copper layer typically accounts for 25% to 40% of the total weight, providing effective conductivity while the aluminum core significantly reduces weight and material cost.
This unique construction allows ECCA wire to deliver conductivity of approximately 61% to 64% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard)—significantly higher than pure aluminum—while maintaining density of 2.85 to 3.63 g/cm³, compared to 8.89 g/cm³ for pure copper. In practical terms, ECCA wire offers a weight reduction of approximately 30% to 40% compared to pure copper wire and can reduce production costs by at least 30%.
Key Performance Characteristics
Round ECCA wire is available in a broad diameter range from 0.03mm to 8.00mm, accommodating diverse winding applications. It is offered in multiple thermal classes to suit different operating environments: Class 130 (B), Class 155 (F), Class 180 (H), Class 200 (C), and Class 220 (C).
The polyurethane type provides good direct soldering performance without requiring prior stripping, while polyester and polyesterimide types offer superior thermal stability and mechanical strength.
Applications of Round ECCA Wire
Round ECCA wire is widely used in high-frequency transformers, inductors, and electromagnetic coils. It also serves household motors, micromotors, compressors, and equipment with high environmental requirements. Audio coils, speaker voice coils, and display deflection coils benefit from its lightweight properties. The simple winding process and approximately 70% space utilization make it ideal for small fan motors, relays, and economical transformers.
Advantages and Limitations
The primary advantage of round ECCA wire is significant cost reduction compared to pure copper wire. Light weight makes it ideal for portable devices and weight-sensitive applications, while the copper layer ensures excellent solderability and corrosion resistance.
