What Is Flat ECCA Wire?
Unlike its round counterpart, flat ECCA wire features a rectangular cross-section, allowing far more efficient use of winding space. The conductor consists of an aluminum core clad with copper, insulated with high-performance enamel coating. Flat ECCA wire achieves a space utilization rate exceeding 90%—significantly higher than round wire’s approximate 70%.
This high fill factor means more copper (or copper-clad aluminum) can be packed into the same winding area, reducing electrical losses and improving thermal performance. Cross-sectional areas range from 0.100 mm² to 65.000 mm², with maximum width edge up to 16.000mm and minimum narrowest edge down to 0.100mm.
Performance Advantages Over Round Wire
The flat geometry offers several distinct performance benefits: enhanced heat dissipation through the larger surface-to-volume ratio; superior mechanical strength and dimensional stability under vibration; and reduced AC losses due to better utilization of available winding space. The recent industry trend toward flat wire motors demonstrates recognition of these benefits—conversion efficiency is higher, heat dissipation is improved, and armature noise is suppressed.
Key Applications
Flat ECCA wire is specifically suited for demanding applications including high-voltage motors and large power transformers requiring high reliability, reactors and chokes, new energy vehicle drive motors where space efficiency is critical, wind turbine generators requiring high performance and durability, and air-conditioning compressors where reliability is paramount.
Latest Industry Trends
The flat ECCA wire industry is experiencing robust growth. China’s enameled wire market exceeded RMB 105 billion in 2025, with new energy vehicle motors accounting for 35% of demand. ECCA wire penetration increased from 8% in 2020 to 15% in 2023. Major manufacturers are expanding production capacity, with one leading company investing RMB 300 million in equipment upgrades and reporting 37% year-on-year sales growth
