PE2 Insulation Layer
Applied directly over the copper is cross-linked polyethylene, designated PE2. The polyethylene compound is free from lead and chlorine, addressing environmental concerns and long-term chemical stability in submerged service. The insulation wall thickness ranges from 0.3 mm to 3.5 mm depending on the operating voltage rating.
The defining characteristic of PE2 insulation is cross-linking. The polyethylene is subjected to a process—either electron beam radiation or chemical agents—that creates covalent bonds between adjacent polymer chains. This transforms the material from a thermoplastic that softens with heat into a thermoset that maintains its shape and dielectric properties at elevated temperatures. The practical result is a temperature rating that permits operation in water up to 50°C without derating. The cross-linked polyethylene provides dielectric breakdown strength of 70 kV/mm and specific insulation resistance on the order of 10^16 Ω·cm.
PA Sheath
The outermost layer is polyamide, commonly known as nylon. Its thickness is comparatively thin, between 0.1 mm and 0.3 mm. The polyamide performs no primary electrical function. Its purpose is mechanical protection. During winding, the wire is pulled through slot liners, bent around stator teeth, and crossed over itself in the end-turn region. The PA sheath provides a tough, low-friction surface that resists abrasion and cut-through, preserving the integrity of the PE2 dielectric beneath. The smooth surface also facilitates wire feeding through automatic winding equipment.
Optional Semiconducting Layer
For applications at operating voltages of 3 kV and above, a semiconducting layer may be applied between the copper conductor and the PE2 insulation. This layer, with thickness between 0.1 mm and 0.3 mm, equalizes the electric field at the conductor surface and prevents localized stress concentrations that could initiate dielectric failure under high-voltage stress.
Taiwanese Motor and Pump Brands Using PE2/PA Winding Wire
Taiwan has a mature pump and motor manufacturing sector, with domestic producers supplying both the local market and export destinations. Several established brands incorporate PE2/PA or equivalent high-grade insulation in their submersible motor products.
Walrus Pump (大井泵浦) stands as one of Taiwan’s most established pump manufacturers, founded in 1967 and publicly listed on the Taipei Exchange. The company has invested heavily in motor technology, obtaining IE3 Motor inside authorization from Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute and developing IE3–IE4 motor designs for improved efficiency. Walrus operates certified pump and motor testing laboratories and holds international certifications including CE, RoHS, CSA, and ISO 9001. Its product line includes submersible sewage pumps and submersible drainage pumps. The performance requirements of these applications—continuous immersion, potential temperature rise, and mechanical stress from the pumped fluid—align with the thermal and dielectric characteristics of PE2/PA insulation.
Tatung Company (大同公司) represents an even longer history in Taiwanese motor manufacturing. Established in 1918 as Taiwan’s first publicly listed company, Tatung began producing electric motors in 1949 and served as a foundational force in the island’s motor industry, collaborating with Westinghouse and Toshiba. The company manufactures motors up to 50,000 HP for applications including water pumps, and has supplied vertical pump motors to Taiwan Water Corporation for municipal water infrastructure. Tatung’s expertise in high-voltage and high-thrust motor designs places it in the segment of the market where PE2/PA insulation’s voltage withstand and thermal stability are directly relevant.
Jing Qin Electric Machinery (井親電機) specializes in submersible pumps and sewage pumps from its base in Hsinchu County. The company has secured multiple public procurement contracts for large vertical-axis pumps and submersible pumps for water treatment facilities, with awarded values reaching over NT$13 million for single installations. Its focus on municipal and industrial pumping equipment positions it among the Taiwanese manufacturers for which reliable motor insulation is a practical necessity rather than an optional upgrade.
These brands, along with other Taiwanese manufacturers, operate in a market where the technical requirements of submersible motor applications naturally select for insulation systems like PE2/PA. The wire’s combination of a solid copper conductor, cross-linked polyethylene dielectric, and polyamide sheath delivers the thermal margin, dielectric strength, and mechanical durability that submersible motors require. For manufacturers competing for municipal contracts and industrial installations, this wire represents a standard engineering choice rather than a premium option.
