For AWG 17 wire, the bare copper conductor dimensions are precisely defined by the AWG standard. The minimum bare diameter is 1.138 mm, the nominal diameter is 1.151 mm, and the maximum diameter is 1.163 mm. This level of precision is essential for maintaining consistent electrical performance and ensuring that the insulation covering meets specified thickness requirements.
The copper conductor is manufactured from high-purity electrical grade copper with a resistivity not exceeding 0.017241 Ω·mm²/m at 20°C. This ensures excellent electrical conductivity and minimal resistive losses in the final winding.
Insulation Covering – Single and Double Fiberglass
The fiberglass covering is available in two standard configurations: single covering and double covering. Each configuration provides different insulation build and overall diameters.
Single Fiberglass Covering
For AWG 17 wire with single fiberglass covering, the minimum increase due to the glass fiber is 0.089 mm to 0.102 mm, depending on the specific glass fiber type specification. For electrical-grade continuous-filament glass yarn insulation, the minimum increase is 0.102 mm. This results in a maximum overall diameter of 1.316 mm for bare conductor constructions.
For wire that has an underlying single film coating (enameled wire before glass wrapping), the maximum overall diameter increases to 1.359 mm. When the wire has a heavy film coating beneath the glass covering, the maximum overall diameter reaches 1.392 mm.
Double Fiberglass Covering
When double fiberglass covering is specified, the minimum increase over the bare conductor is 0.140 mm to 0.152 mm. For electrical-grade continuous-filament glass yarn insulation, the minimum increase is 0.152 mm. The maximum overall diameter for double covered bare conductor constructions is 1.392 mm.
If the wire has a single film coating beneath the double glass covering, the maximum overall diameter is 1.465 mm. For heavy film coated wire with double covering, the maximum overall diameter is 1.468 mm.
Thermal Classes and Insulation Materials
Temperature Ratings
Fiberglass insulated winding wire is available in multiple thermal classes to suit different operating conditions:
Class F (155°C) – Modified polyester resin impregnation provides reliable thermal performance for standard industrial motor and transformer applications.
Class H (180°C) – Polyester-imide resin impregnation offers improved thermal stability, suitable for higher temperature environments.
Class C (200°C) – Silicone resin impregnation achieves the highest practical temperature rating for organic insulation systems, suitable for the most demanding high-temperature applications.
Insulation System Characteristics
The fiberglass covering consists of electrical-grade continuous-filament glass yarn, which is wrapped around the conductor in a spiral pattern. For resin-impregnated versions, the glass fibers are bonded together and to the conductor through a varnish impregnation and curing process. This creates a unified insulation system that exhibits excellent resistance to abrasion, vibration, and thermal stress.
Packaging and Supply
Standard Packaging Options
Fiberglass insulated round copper winding wire is typically supplied on wooden or poly-wood spools designed to protect the wire during transit and storage. Common packaging configurations include:
Spool Types – PT-25, PT-30, PT-60, PT-90, PT-200, and PT-270, representing different spool sizes and capacities.
Spool Dimensions – Typical spool sizes include 250mm × 500mm and 250mm × 600mm.
Coil Weights – Standard coil weights range from 30 kg to 150 kg per spool, with custom weights available upon request.
Custom Packaging
For customers with specific requirements, customised packaging solutions are available. This may include special spool dimensions, pallet configurations, packaging materials, or other shipping requirements designed to ensure the wire arrives in optimal condition for winding operations.
Quality Compliance
Our fiberglass insulated AWG 17 round copper winding wire is manufactured in compliance with multiple international standards to ensure quality and compatibility with global equipment designs:
IEC 60317-0-6:2020 – The international standard specifying general requirements for glass-fibre wound resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled round copper winding wires.
NEMA MW 44-C – North American standard for glass fiber covered magnet wire, applicable to Class 200 thermal ratings.
GB/T 7672 – Chinese national standard for glass-fiber wound winding wires
