The width ranges from a minimum of 2.0 mm to a maximum of 16.0 mm, while thickness ranges from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm. The specified combinations of width and thickness follow the ratios defined in IEC 60317-0-4, ensuring consistent product geometry across manufacturers.
For applications requiring dimensions beyond this standard range, extended sizes are available. Rectangular conductors can be supplied with thickness from 1.0 mm to 10.0 mm and width from 3.0 mm to 35.0 mm. This extended range accommodates larger power equipment designs where standard dimensions prove insufficient.
Conductor Materials
Both copper and aluminium conductors are available with glass-fiber covering. Copper offers superior electrical conductivity with resistivity not exceeding 0.017241 Ω·mm²/m at 20°C, while aluminium provides significant weight advantages at approximately 62% IACS conductivity. The choice between materials depends on the specific performance requirements of the application.
Insulation Configurations
The glass-fiber covering is available in single or double layer configurations. Single glass-fiber covering provides basic insulation protection, while double covering offers enhanced dielectric strength and mechanical robustness. The covering can be applied over bare conductors or over grade 1 or grade 2 enameled conductors, with the underlying enamel layer providing additional dielectric protection.
Thermal Performance and Insulation Systems
Temperature Classes
Glass-fiber wound rectangular wire is available in multiple thermal classes to match application requirements:
Class F (155°C) is specified in IEC 60317-32 and uses polyester-based resin impregnation. This thermal class serves standard industrial motor and transformer applications where moderate temperature capability suffices.
Class H (180°C) employs polyester-imide resins for improved thermal stability, suitable for higher temperature environments.
Class C (200°C) is specified in IEC 60317-33 and IEC 60317-62, using silicone resin impregnation. This achieves the highest practical temperature rating for organic insulation systems, suitable for traction motors and other demanding applications.
The impregnating resin or varnish binds the glass fibers together and to the conductor, creating a unified insulation system that maintains its integrity even under thermal cycling and vibration.
Polyester Glass-Fiber Constructions
IEC 60317-0-8 specifically addresses polyester glass-fiber wound rectangular copper wire, covering both fused unvarnished and resin or varnish impregnated variants. This standard provides general requirements that complement the particular type specifications in IEC 60317-32, IEC 60317-33, and IEC 60317-62.
